Project Blue Book Case #7957. On June 21, 1962, a bright object was observed over Indianapolis, Indiana — the second Blue Book unknown from the state capital, following Case #190 from July 1948. Fourteen years separated the two Indianapolis cases, spanning nearly the entire history of the Air Force's UFO investigation program.
Indianapolis had grown significantly since 1948. The city remained an important crossroads of American aviation, with its airport serving as a major commercial hub and several military facilities operating in the surrounding region. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, hosting its annual 500-mile race just weeks before this sighting, drew national attention to the city each May.
June 1962 was during a moderate period of Blue Book activity. The space race was in full acceleration — John Glenn had orbited the Earth just four months earlier — and the American public's attention was increasingly focused on the skies. The Gemini program was being planned, and the distinction between identified space vehicles and unidentified aerial objects was becoming an emerging issue.
The bright object over Indianapolis could not be matched to any conventional aircraft or space debris. The case was classified "Unknown."
