Project Blue Book Case #185. On July 29, 1948, an unidentified object was observed over Indianapolis, Indiana — just two days before Case #190 on July 31. The occurrence of two unknowns over the same city within 48 hours was highly unusual and suggested either sustained anomalous activity or a particularly attentive observer population during this critical week.
Late July 1948 was one of the most significant periods in early UFO history. The Chiles-Whitted encounter over Alabama on July 24 — in which airline pilots reported a cigar-shaped craft with illuminated windows — had alarmed Project Sign investigators. Indianapolis's two unknowns within this same week added to the sense that something extraordinary was occurring.
The case was classified "Unknown."
