Project Blue Book Case #7931. On May 27, 1962, witnesses in Palmer, Alaska — a farming community in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley approximately 40 miles northeast of Anchorage — observed a bright object in the sky. Palmer sits at the base of the Chugach Mountains, surrounded by the dramatic terrain of south-central Alaska.
Alaska's military significance in 1962 was immense. Elmendorf AFB and Fort Richardson near Anchorage were the state's primary military installations, and the entire state served as a forward defense position against Soviet incursions across the Bering Strait. NORAD maintained extensive radar coverage, and interceptors at Elmendorf were on constant alert.
May in south-central Alaska brings extended twilight — the "midnight sun" period was approaching, with daylight lasting over 18 hours. This unusual lighting could create distinctive atmospheric effects, but also provided extended observation periods and unusual sky conditions.
The object could not be identified. The case was classified "Unknown."
