Project Blue Book Case #1987. On August 26, 1952, an unexplained object was observed in the vicinity of Biloxi, Mississippi, home to Keesler Air Force Base — the Air Force's primary electronics and radar training center. The object's appearance near this sensitive installation elevated the case's significance.
Keesler AFB trained the radar operators and electronics technicians who staffed America's air defense network. Personnel at the base were among the most knowledgeable electronics specialists in the military, making them both highly credible observers and acutely aware of the differences between genuine aerial contacts and equipment artifacts or atmospheric anomalies.
The sighting occurred during the great 1952 wave, which had peaked in July but continued to produce significant cases through the autumn. August 1952 remained one of the most active months in Blue Book history, with reports arriving from coast to coast. The Gulf Coast region, with its concentration of military installations, contributed a notable share of these reports.
Biloxi's position on the Mississippi Gulf Coast placed it in the flight paths of military aircraft from multiple bases across the southeastern United States. Despite this heavy traffic, the observed object did not correspond to any known military or civilian flight operations. Its behavior — described as luminous and exhibiting non-conventional movement patterns — was inconsistent with any aircraft type in the inventory.
Weather conditions and radar propagation data for the Gulf Coast were reviewed, and no atmospheric anomalies were found to explain the sighting. The case was classified "Unknown" by Blue Book investigators.
