Charles Fort, a massive 17th-century star-shaped fortress overlooking Kinsale Harbour in County Cork, is haunted by a ghost known as the White Lady of Kinsale. According to legend, a bride named Wilful Doyle was married at the fort, and on her wedding night, her new husband was shot dead by a sentry for falling asleep on duty. Overwhelmed by grief, the bride threw herself from the ramparts into the sea. Her ghost, dressed in a white wedding gown, has been seen walking the battlements and peering from the windows of the officers' quarters. Some witnesses describe her wandering the fort's extensive grounds, moving along the ramparts with a slow, mournful gait. Soldiers stationed at the fort during its centuries of military use reported encounters with the White Lady, and the haunting continued after the fort was decommissioned in 1922. The fort's commanding position above Kinsale — one of Ireland's most picturesque harbor towns — and its imposing stone architecture create a dramatic setting. On foggy mornings, when mist rolls in from the harbor and the fort's star-shaped walls emerge from the cloud, the White Lady feels like a natural part of the landscape.
