Leap Castle in County Offaly is widely considered the most haunted castle in Ireland, and its dark history provides ample reason. The castle was built by the O'Carroll clan in the 15th century and was the scene of horrific violence — during a power struggle, one O'Carroll chieftain murdered his own brother, a priest, while he was celebrating Mass in the chapel (now known as the Bloody Chapel). A dungeon beneath the chapel, known as an oubliette, was discovered in the early 20th century to contain dozens of human skeletons — people who had been dropped through a trap door onto spikes below and left to die. The castle's most terrifying ghost is not human — it is an entity known as the Elemental, described as a small, hunched creature with a decomposing face that emits an overpowering stench of sulphur and decay. The Elemental is said to have been summoned during occult experiments conducted by a former owner and cannot be banished. Other ghosts include the murdered priest, a red-robed woman who appears in the Bloody Chapel, and phantom O'Carroll warriors. The current owner, musician Sean Ryan, lives in the partially restored castle and has documented numerous encounters.
