The Brown Mountain Lights are mysterious luminous phenomena observed near Brown Mountain in the Pisgah National Forest of western North Carolina, in Burke and Caldwell counties. Reports date back centuries, with Cherokee and Catawba legends attributing the lights to the spirits of warriors killed in a great battle between the two nations. The earliest written account comes from 1913, when a fisherman reported seeing mysterious reddish lights rising above the mountain. The lights have been described as floating orbs of various colors — red, blue, white, and orange — that rise above the ridgeline, hover, and then vanish. They appear most frequently in the fall months and are visible from several observation points along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The U.S. Geological Survey conducted investigations in 1913 and 1922, attributing the lights to locomotive headlights and brush fires, but these explanations were disputed when the lights continued appearing after a massive flood in 1916 knocked out all rail service and power in the area. The lights have been featured in folklore, music, and television, including the 1962 bluegrass song by Scotty Wiseman. Despite decades of study, no definitive scientific explanation has been established, and the Brown Mountain Lights remain one of America's most enduring paranormal mysteries.
