Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden, South Carolina, is reportedly haunted by the ghost of Agnes of Glasgow, a Scottish woman who followed her husband to America in the colonial era. According to local legend, Agnes traveled across the Atlantic to reunite with her husband, only to discover he had died before her arrival. Grief-stricken and alone in a foreign land, Agnes died shortly after, and she was buried near the church. Her ghost has been reported walking the churchyard at night, dressed in 18th-century clothing, as if still searching for her husband. Visitors and church members have described a woman in a dark cloak moving among the headstones, sometimes pausing at specific graves before continuing her wandering. Some have reported hearing weeping near Agnes's supposed burial site, and flowers placed on certain graves have been found rearranged by morning. The church, founded in 1805, sits in the historic district of Camden, which saw significant action during the Revolutionary War. The concentration of colonial-era graves and the town's violent history during the British occupation have contributed to Camden's broader reputation as one of South Carolina's most haunted communities.
