Project Blue Book Case #7499. On July 11, 1961, witnesses in Springfield, Ohio — a city just 25 miles northeast of Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton — observed a bright object in the sky. Like the Vandalia case (Case #8549) from 1963, this sighting occurred practically in Blue Book's backyard. Springfield was close enough to Wright-Patterson that Blue Book staff could have investigated in person within minutes.
Ohio's consistent production of unknowns — Columbus, Vandalia, Bedford, Toledo, and now Springfield — created an uncomfortable reality for the program. The phenomenon was not happening in some remote corner of the country; it was occurring within commuting distance of Blue Book's own offices.
Springfield's Clark County Airport and nearby Wright-Patterson added military and civilian air traffic to the area. The object could not be matched to any. The case was classified "Unknown."
