Project Blue Book Case #980. On October 2, 1951, witnesses in Columbus, Ohio, observed a bright, disc-like object in the sky above the state capital. The object's distinct shape and luminosity set it apart from conventional aircraft and atmospheric phenomena.
Columbus held particular significance for UFO investigation. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base — the home of Project Blue Book itself — was located just 70 miles to the southwest in Dayton. Blue Book's offices, its investigators, and its scientific consultant J. Allen Hynek were all based at Wright-Patterson. A sighting in Columbus was, in a sense, occurring in Blue Book's own backyard.
Ohio's central position in the country's air traffic network meant that Columbus residents were accustomed to seeing aircraft of all types, from commercial airliners to military jets from Wright-Patterson, Lockbourne AFB (now Rickenbacker International), and other Ohio military installations. The witnesses' determination that this object was unlike any familiar aircraft carried particular weight.
The October 1951 timing placed this case in a period of growing UFO activity that would culminate in the explosive 1952 wave. The Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, radar incidents had occurred just weeks earlier in September 1951, directly leading to the reorganization and expansion of the Air Force's UFO investigation program. Blue Book was being established in response to these events, and cases from this transitional period were handled with increasing rigor.
No conventional explanation was found. The case was classified "Unknown."
