Project Blue Book Case #809. On September 21, 1950, witnesses in Provincetown, Massachusetts — the town at the very tip of Cape Cod — observed a bright object in the sky over the Atlantic. Provincetown's dramatic position, jutting into the ocean at the end of a 65-mile sandy peninsula, provided unobstructed views of the sky in nearly every direction.
Cape Cod's military significance was considerable. Otis Air Force Base, an Air Defense Command installation with interceptor squadrons, was located mid-Cape. The Cape Cod Canal was a strategic shipping route, and the surrounding waters were patrolled by the Coast Guard and Navy. Provincetown itself had been a military outpost during both World Wars.
September 1950 was during the Korean War's early and most desperate phase. Military readiness was elevated nationwide, and any unidentified aerial object — particularly near coastal defense installations — drew heightened attention.
The object's brightness against the dark Atlantic sky was its most notable feature. The maritime setting eliminated ground-based light sources as potential explanations, and the limited air traffic at Cape Cod's tip simplified the investigation. No military or civilian aircraft correlated with the sighting. The case was classified "Unknown."
