Zvíkov Castle, perched at the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers in southern Bohemia, Czech Republic, is one of the oldest and most atmospheric castles in the country. Since at least 1597, stories have circulated about the Zvíkovský Rarášek — a supernatural imp or poltergeist that inhabits the castle. The Rarášek is not a ghost in the traditional sense but rather a mischievous spirit from Czech folklore, similar to a brownie or kobold. According to legend, the entity extinguishes candles, moves objects, disturbs sleepers, and creates unexplained noises throughout the castle. Those who attempt to photograph or film inside the castle reportedly experience persistent equipment failures — cameras malfunction, batteries drain instantly, and film develops blank. The castle's most haunted area is the chapel tower, where visitors describe an overwhelming feeling of being watched and a sudden drop in temperature regardless of the weather. Some visitors have reported seeing a small, dark figure darting through the castle's stone corridors. Zvíkov Castle's dramatic setting — on a rocky promontory surrounded by the dark waters of the Orlík Reservoir — enhances its medieval atmosphere. The castle dates to the early 13th century and has survived fires, sieges, and centuries of abandonment, yet the Rarášek endures as its most persistent resident.
