The castle ruin of Rodenstein in the Odenwald forest of Hesse, Germany is the setting for one of the most famous and best-documented Wild Hunt traditions in Central Europe. According to legend, the ghost of the Rodensteiner — a medieval knight of the castle — rides out with his spectral army during times of war or national crisis, his ghostly cavalcade traveling through the sky from Rodenstein to the nearby castle of Schnellerts. The sound of the Rodensteiner's ride — clattering armor, drumbeats, shouting, and the thundering of hooves — was reportedly heard before every major European conflict. Local records claim the ride was heard before the Napoleonic Wars, the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, and both World Wars. The tradition is so well-established that a museum dedicated to the legend operates near the castle ruins. The Rodenstein Wild Hunt is unusual in that it served a prophetic function: the direction of the ride indicated whether Germany would be at war (riding from Rodenstein to Schnellerts) or at peace (returning). This association between the Wild Hunt and prophecy is found in other Germanic traditions but is nowhere as specifically documented as at Rodenstein.
