Project Blue Book Case #5419. On November 26, 1957, an unidentified object was observed over Robins Air Force Base in central Georgia. The sighting occurred during the intense November 1957 UFO wave — triggered in part by the Soviet launch of Sputnik on October 4 — which produced some of the most dramatic cases in Blue Book history, including the Levelland, Texas, vehicle-interference encounters.
Robins AFB was — and remains — one of the Air Force's most important logistics and maintenance depots. Home to the Warner Robins Air Materiel Area, the base handled maintenance, repair, and overhaul of aircraft and missile systems. It also hosted air defense interceptor units responsible for protecting the southeastern United States.
The November 1957 wave was remarkable for its intensity and the quality of its reports. In the span of a few weeks, law enforcement officers, military personnel, and civilian witnesses across the country reported close encounters with luminous objects that appeared to interfere with vehicle electrical systems and engines. The wave generated enormous media coverage and Congressional concern.
The Robins AFB sighting came near the end of this wave, as reports were beginning to taper off. The object observed over the base was inconsistent with any known aircraft or atmospheric phenomenon. Base security and flight operations were consulted, and no military or civilian aircraft could account for the sighting.
Given the heightened alert status of military installations during the Sputnik crisis and the simultaneous UFO wave, the Robins case was investigated with particular attention. Despite this scrutiny, no identification could be made. The case was classified "Unknown."
