Project Blue Book Case #868. On January 12, 1951, an unidentified object was observed over Fort Benning, Georgia — the U.S. Army's Infantry School and one of the largest military installations in the world. Fort Benning (now Fort Moore) trained virtually every infantry officer and many enlisted soldiers in the Army, and its vast reservation included multiple airfields, firing ranges, and training areas.
Fort Benning's Lawson Army Airfield was a busy military aviation facility, supporting airborne operations, transport flights, and Army aviation training. The base's personnel were thoroughly familiar with military aircraft of all types, from transport planes to the helicopters and light observation aircraft that were becoming increasingly important to Army operations.
January 1951 was during the Korean War, when military installations across the country were on heightened alert and readiness. Fort Benning was particularly active, with accelerated training schedules pushing thousands of infantry soldiers through the pipeline for deployment to Korea. Security awareness was elevated across the base.
The object observed over Fort Benning did not match any aircraft operating from Lawson Field or visiting the base. Its characteristics were sufficiently anomalous to generate a formal report through intelligence channels. The proximity to Columbus, Georgia, and its civilian air traffic was also considered and eliminated.
The case was classified "Unknown" during the Project Grudge era, before Blue Book's establishment.
