Project Blue Book Case #2172. On October 17, 1952, an unidentified object was observed near Killeen, Texas — the city adjacent to Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos), the U.S. Army's largest active-duty armored post. Fort Hood's massive reservation, encompassing over 200,000 acres of central Texas terrain, was home to armored and infantry divisions and served as the Army's primary testing ground for armored warfare tactics.
The Fort Hood area's military airspace was busy with Army aviation — helicopters, observation aircraft, and transiting military flights. Gray Army Airfield on the post handled significant air traffic. Witnesses near Killeen were accustomed to the sight and sound of military aircraft, making their assessment that this object was anomalous particularly noteworthy.
October 1952 came in the aftermath of the great summer wave, during a period when Blue Book was still processing the enormous volume of cases from July and August. While the rate of new reports had declined from the summer peak, significant cases continued to arrive — and sightings near major military installations received priority attention.
The object near Killeen did not match any aircraft type associated with Fort Hood operations or any civilian traffic in the area. Its characteristics were described as inconsistent with conventional aviation technology. The case added to the persistent pattern of unexplained objects appearing near military bases that ran throughout Blue Book's history.
The case was classified "Unknown."
