Project Blue Book Case #1969. On August 24, 1952, a bright object was observed over Levelland, Texas — a small city on the South Plains near Lubbock. While Levelland would become famous in UFO history five years later during the dramatic November 1957 vehicle-interference wave, this earlier 1952 case received less attention.
Levelland sits on the Llano Estacado — the Staked Plains — at approximately 3,500 feet, in terrain so flat and featureless that early Spanish explorers marked their route with stakes to avoid becoming hopelessly lost. The landscape provided unlimited visibility.
August 1952 was during the great wave. Reese AFB near Lubbock was the nearest military installation. The case was classified "Unknown."
