Project Blue Book Case #7134. On November 29, 1960, an unidentified object was observed south of Kyushu, Japan — the southernmost of Japan's four main islands. Kyushu hosted multiple U.S. military installations, including Sasebo Naval Base (a major fleet support facility) and Itazuke Air Base near Fukuoka.
The waters south of Kyushu were strategically critical, connecting the East China Sea with the Pacific and forming part of the maritime corridor that the Soviet Pacific Fleet would need to traverse to reach the open ocean. Navy and Air Force surveillance of these waters was constant.
The object could not be identified through Far East Air Forces or Navy Pacific Fleet channels. The case was classified "Unknown."
