Project Blue Book Case #1082. On March 29, 1952, an unidentified object was observed at Misawa Air Force Base in northern Honshu, Japan. Misawa was a critical fighter base supporting Korean War air operations and maintaining air defense of the Japanese home islands against potential Soviet incursion from the north.
Misawa's position in the Aomori Prefecture, at the northern tip of Honshu, placed it closest to the Soviet Union's Pacific military bases on Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. The base's fighter squadrons — flying F-86 Sabres — maintained constant readiness against potential Soviet threats. Radar operators at Misawa tracked every aircraft approaching from the north.
March 1952 was during the Korean War's grinding stalemate phase. Any unidentified object at a forward fighter base was a potential enemy contact. The case was classified "Unknown."
