Project Blue Book Case #3287. On October 29, 1954, an unidentified object was reported over the Azores — the second Blue Book case from this mid-Atlantic Portuguese archipelago (the first being Case #3224 from Santa Maria Airport in September). The October sighting came at the peak of the great European wave, which had been producing thousands of reports across the continent.
The Azores served as a critical waypoint for trans-Atlantic military and civilian aviation. Lajes Field on Terceira Island was a major NATO air base used by U.S. Air Force transport and patrol aircraft. The archipelago's position made it a natural observation post for anything crossing the Atlantic, and military personnel stationed there were experienced aerial observers.
October 1954 was the most intense month of the European wave, with France, Italy, and the Iberian Peninsula reporting close encounters, physical traces, and occupant sightings at unprecedented rates. The Azores, while geographically isolated, were connected to the wave through the Atlantic air and shipping routes.
The object could not be identified through coordination with Lajes Field and regional air traffic control. The case was classified "Unknown" — the second Azores unknown in just five weeks.
