Project Blue Book Case #3224. On September 21, 1954, personnel at Santa Maria Airport on Santa Maria Island in the Azores reported an unidentified aerial object. The Azores — a Portuguese archipelago in the mid-Atlantic — served as a critical refueling stop for trans-Atlantic military and civilian flights, and Santa Maria's airport was a major waypoint on the route between North America and Europe.
The sighting occurred during the great European wave of autumn 1954, which produced thousands of UFO reports across France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. While Blue Book primarily investigated sightings within U.S. territory and by U.S. military personnel, cases at installations with American military presence or strategic significance were also included in the project's files.
Santa Maria Airport's location in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean provided observers with an uncluttered sky environment. There was minimal light pollution, and air traffic through the area, while regular, was well-documented and controlled. The object reported on this occasion did not correspond to any scheduled flight or known military operation.
The September-October 1954 wave was one of the most intense concentrations of UFO activity in European history, with close-encounter reports and physical-trace cases being reported daily. The Azores sighting, while less dramatic than some of the Continental European cases, was notable for its occurrence at an aviation facility staffed by experienced observers. The case was classified "Unknown" by Blue Book investigators.
