Project Blue Book Case #7417. On May 22, 1961, an unidentified object was observed at Tyndall Air Force Base near Panama City, Florida. Tyndall was the Air Force's primary weapons controller training center, where personnel learned to direct interceptor aircraft against aerial targets — making its staff among the most expert air surveillance professionals in the military.
The base operated extensive radar systems for training purposes and regularly conducted live weapons exercises over the Gulf of Mexico. Tyndall's personnel tracked drone targets, towed targets, and manned interceptors daily, developing an intimate familiarity with how various objects appeared on radar and to the naked eye under Gulf Coast atmospheric conditions.
The object observed at Tyndall did not match any training drone, target aircraft, or conventional military vehicle. Its characteristics were sufficiently anomalous to merit a formal Blue Book report from personnel whose professional specialty was identifying and tracking aerial objects.
Tyndall's Gulf Coast location added the complexity of maritime air traffic — Coast Guard flights, naval aviation from Pensacola, and commercial traffic along the Gulf routes. Despite this complexity, the base's sophisticated tracking systems and expert operators could not match the object to any known source.
The irony of an unidentified object appearing at a facility specifically designed to train people to identify aerial objects was noted by investigators. The case was classified "Unknown."
