Pioneer Park in the Mission Hills neighborhood of San Diego sits atop what was once Calvary Cemetery, one of the city's earliest burial grounds. When the city decided to convert the cemetery into a park in the early 20th century, many of the headstones were removed or relocated, but a significant number of bodies were left in the ground. The park is now a quiet residential green space, but its cemetery origins have produced decades of ghost stories. Residents in the surrounding homes and visitors to the park have reported seeing ghostly figures standing among the trees at night, hearing whispered conversations in empty areas, and feeling sudden cold spots on warm evenings. Some dog walkers have described their animals refusing to enter certain sections of the park or barking at seemingly empty spots. A few of the original headstones remain visible at the park's edges, serving as reminders of the bodies that remain below the carefully maintained lawn. Paranormal investigators have recorded anomalous electromagnetic readings throughout the park, with particular concentrations near where the old cemetery plots were mapped. The park's haunted reputation is well-known in San Diego's paranormal community and has been featured in local ghost tours.
