Chula Vista sits between San Diego's massive naval complex to the north and the Mexican border to the south, within one of the most heavily militarized regions on the West Coast.
Naval Air Station North Island, Naval Station San Diego, the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, and Convair's Atlas ICBM production plant all operated within a 15-mile radius. The region's airspace was dense with military and civilian traffic.
Despite this comprehensive monitoring, the object could not be identified. The case was classified "Unknown."
