Mussoorie, the famous Himalayan hill station in Uttarakhand, carries a legend of a screaming witch (chudail) who haunts its mountainsides. According to local tradition, a woman accused of witchcraft was killed by villagers in the surrounding mountains, and her vengeful spirit has wandered the forested slopes ever since. Visitors and residents describe hearing blood-curdling screams echoing through the valleys at night, particularly during the monsoon season when clouds descend to envelop the town and visibility drops to near zero. Some have reported seeing a dishevelled woman with long, matted hair standing on the mountain paths, her face twisted in rage, who disappears when observers flee. In the folk traditions of Uttarakhand and the broader Himalayan region, the chudail is one of the most feared supernatural entities — the ghost of a woman who died violently or unjustly, whose spirit returns to terrorize the living. Mussoorie's colonial-era architecture, its pine-forested ridges, and the dramatic views of the Doon Valley and the snow-capped Himalayas create a setting of extraordinary beauty that the witch's screams turn terrifying after dark.
