Project Blue Book Case #2913. On the evening of February 26, 1954, residents of Newburyport, Massachusetts, reported a luminous object performing erratic maneuvers in the winter sky above the Merrimack River valley. The object emitted a steady white-yellow glow and moved in patterns inconsistent with any known aircraft — alternating between hovering motionless and executing rapid lateral movements.
Multiple independent witnesses in this historic coastal city reported the sighting, with observation times ranging from several minutes to nearly a quarter hour. The object's altitude was estimated between 3,000 and 5,000 feet based on triangulation of witness accounts. No sound was associated with the object, despite its apparent proximity.
February 1954 fell during a relatively active period of sightings across New England. Newburyport's location along the northeastern seaboard placed it within the operational corridor of several military air bases, and investigators checked flight logs from nearby installations including Pease AFB in New Hampshire. No military or civilian aircraft were found to account for the observation.
Weather data for the evening ruled out temperature inversions, and the object's observed behavior — particularly its ability to hover and then accelerate rapidly — was inconsistent with any meteorological phenomenon. Blue Book investigators classified the case as "Unknown," noting the credibility of the witnesses and the absence of any satisfactory conventional explanation.
