The Captain George Flavel House Museum in Astoria, Oregon, is a grand Queen Anne Victorian mansion built in 1886 by Captain George Flavel, one of the most powerful and feared bar pilots on the Columbia River. Flavel amassed a fortune guiding ships across the treacherous Columbia Bar — known as the 'Graveyard of the Pacific' — and his mansion was the finest house in Astoria. Now a museum operated by the Clatsop County Historical Society, the Flavel House has been the subject of poltergeist-like reports for decades. Staff and visitors have described objects moving on their own, display items being rearranged overnight, and doors slamming shut throughout the house. The most frequently reported phenomenon is the sound of heavy footsteps on the upper floors when the building is closed and empty. Some staff members have described feeling a strong, authoritative presence — consistent with Captain Flavel's domineering personality — watching over the museum's operations. The attic and the servants' quarters are considered the most active areas. Visitors have occasionally reported seeing a figure in Victorian-era clothing watching them from the upper windows as they approach the house. The mansion's prominent position overlooking the Columbia River and the town of Astoria adds to its commanding, slightly intimidating character.
