The McMenamins Grand Lodge in Forest Grove, Oregon, was originally built in 1922 as a Masonic and Eastern Star Home for the elderly. The building later served as a retirement home and then stood vacant before being converted into a hotel, restaurant, and entertainment venue by the McMenamins chain. During its years as a retirement and convalescent home, many residents died in the building. Reports of paranormal activity have persisted through all phases of the building's history. Staff and guests most frequently report hearing the disembodied voices of children laughing and playing in the hallways, despite no children being present. This is particularly unsettling given the building's history as an elderly care facility. Other reported phenomena include doors opening and closing on their own, lights flickering in specific rooms, and the apparition of an elderly woman in a nightgown who has been seen in the corridors of the second floor. Some guests have described waking to find their personal belongings neatly rearranged, as though a caretaker had tidied up. The building's original Masonic architecture — with its ceremonial halls and formal gardens — adds an additional layer of mystique to the already atmospheric location.
