The Hotel deLuxe in downtown Portland, Oregon, originally opened as the Mallory Hotel in 1912. The hotel's ghost is said to be Simon Benson, the prominent Norwegian-American lumber baron who built the hotel. Benson was known for his philanthropy and his contributions to Portland's development, including the iconic Benson Bubblers — public drinking fountains throughout downtown. His apparition has been described by hotel staff and guests as a distinguished older gentleman in early 20th-century formal attire who appears in the lobby, the corridors, and occasionally in guest rooms. He is most often seen near the main staircase and in the dining room area. Staff have described feeling a presence of benevolent supervision, as though someone is inspecting the hotel's operations. Lights in the lobby have been known to flicker in a rhythmic pattern, and housekeeping staff have reported freshly made beds being found with an impression, as though someone had been sitting on them. The hotel underwent a major renovation and rebranding as the Hotel deLuxe, and during the construction period, workers reported an increase in unexplained phenomena — hammering sounds at night, tools being moved, and cold spots in the corridors.
