Fengmen Village is an abandoned settlement in a remote valley in Qinyang, Henan province, that has been dubbed one of China's most haunted places. The village was once home to several hundred inhabitants but was gradually abandoned over the 20th century as residents moved to more accessible areas. What makes Fengmen Village distinctive is that many homes still contain the personal belongings and furniture of their former residents, and — most unsettlingly — Qing-dynasty coffins left in several houses. Visitors who have trekked to the remote valley report hearing voices from the empty houses, particularly at night, and experiencing the feeling of being watched from the dark doorways. Some visitors have described seeing figures standing in the windows of houses that are known to be empty. EVP recordings taken in the village have allegedly captured voices speaking in a local dialect. The village's extreme isolation — accessible only by hiking through mountain terrain — means few casual visitors reach it, but its reputation has made it a destination for Chinese urban explorers and paranormal investigators. The presence of unburied coffins in the houses violates fundamental Chinese burial customs, and some believe this spiritual irregularity is the source of the haunting.
