The 'Beijing 330 Bus' incident is the most widely-circulated modern Chinese urban legend, rooted in a real disappearance case from the Xiangshan (Fragrant Hills) district of northwest Beijing in November 1995. According to accounts that circulated throughout Beijing that winter and have been preserved in contemporary Chinese paranormal literature, a Route 330 bus ran its scheduled final departure from Yuanmingyuan toward the Xiangshan terminus at approximately 11:00 PM on November 14, 1995. Three passengers boarded at the second-to-last stop: two elderly men and a younger man who appeared to be supporting them. The conductress, Xiao Liu, and the young driver Wang noticed that the two elderly men appeared rigid and did not speak, while the younger man held them upright.
A female passenger who had also boarded earlier became concerned and — according to the common version of the story — falsely accused the young man of having stolen her money, providing a pretext for her and a second passenger to disembark at the next stop with the conductress. The bus and its remaining passengers continued toward Xiangshan. It was never seen again. According to the most-repeated version of the legend, the bus was found weeks later in the Miyun Reservoir some 80 kilometres northeast of its route, with the decomposed bodies of the driver, conductress, and three passengers inside. The bodies showed signs of having been deceased before entering the water. Official Beijing Public Security Bureau files for the case were reportedly sealed.
The incident is the subject of persistent reporting in Chinese paranormal literature. Retired Beijing bus-line employee Ma Guiyuan published an account in 2008 claiming direct knowledge of the case. The Beijing Public Security Bureau has formally denied having files on the specific '330 Bus' incident but has acknowledged multiple unsolved-disappearance cases from the 1990s Xiangshan district. The legend has inspired three Chinese films and a Netflix co-production. Whether the incident occurred precisely as described or represents a composite of real 1990s disappearances embroidered by oral tradition, the Beijing 330 Bus remains the defining modern Chinese paranormal legend.
