Project Blue Book Case #2441. On February 24, 1953, a fast-moving luminous object was observed over Sherman, Texas — a city near the Oklahoma border approximately 60 miles north of Dallas. The object's speed significantly exceeded that of any conventional aircraft, and its bright, steady luminosity distinguished it from natural phenomena.
Sherman sits along the Red River corridor, a region with significant military presence. Perrin Air Force Base, an Air Training Command jet pilot training facility, was located adjacent to Sherman and would have been the most likely source of conventional military aircraft in the area. However, the observed object did not match any aircraft type used for training at Perrin.
February 1953 came just weeks after the CIA's Robertson Panel had concluded its review of the UFO problem in January. The panel's recommendation to debunk and downplay UFO reports was beginning to influence Blue Book's approach, yet cases that genuinely defied explanation continued to be classified as "Unknown" despite the institutional pressure to resolve them.
The object's speed was the primary distinguishing characteristic. Witnesses described it covering a large expanse of sky in a short time, far exceeding the velocity of the jet trainers from Perrin AFB that regularly overflew the area. The luminosity was constant and did not flicker or fade during the observation.
Perrin AFB flight operations were checked and all training flights were accounted for. No civilian aircraft matched the sighting. The case was classified "Unknown."
