Bright object observed near Pantex nuclear weapons plant at Amarillo, Texas (1953)

Project Blue Book Case #2663. On August 3, 1953, a bright object was observed over Amarillo, Texas — the Panhandle city adjacent to the Pantex nuclear weapons assembly plant, where every nuclear warhead in the U.S. arsenal was assembled and maintained. Amarillo AFB also hosted Air Training Command operations. The nuclear weapons facility's proximity added the case to the pattern of unknowns near nuclear sites. The case was classified "Unknown."
