Project Blue Book Case #3326. On November 15, 1954, a bright object was observed over Augusta, Maine — the state capital, situated on the Kennebec River. The sighting came during the tail end of the great autumn 1954 wave that had peaked across Europe in September and October.
Augusta's position in central Maine placed it within the northeastern air defense zone. The state hosted several military installations including Dow AFB in Bangor (a SAC bomber base) and Loring AFB in Limestone (the northeasternmost SAC installation in the continental U.S.). Maine's skies were regularly overflown by SAC bombers on training missions and alert scrambles.
November 1954 marked the final phase of the most geographically widespread UFO wave in history. While the European epicenter had subsided, American sightings remained elevated. The Augusta case was among the wave's last entries.
No conventional explanation was found. The case was classified "Unknown."
