Project Blue Book Case #4760. On June 12, 1957, an unidentified object was reported over Milan, Italy — the country's largest and most industrialized city. The sighting reached Blue Book through NATO intelligence channels, as Italy was a key alliance member hosting American military installations.
Milan's position in northern Italy placed it near several NATO air facilities. Aviano Air Base, a major USAF installation in the Friuli region, was approximately 200 miles to the east. Italy's own Aeronautica Militare maintained interceptor squadrons across the country.
Italy had been one of the epicenters of the great 1954 European wave, producing hundreds of dramatic close-encounter cases. The 1957 Milan sighting, while less dramatic, maintained the Italian connection to the phenomenon three years after the wave's peak.
The case was classified "Unknown."
