Project Blue Book Case #6027. On September 1, 1958, an unidentified object was observed over Wheelus Air Force Base near Tripoli, Libya — one of the most important American military installations in the Mediterranean and North Africa. Wheelus served as a major gunnery and bombing range, as well as a staging base for operations across the Middle East and Africa.
The Libyan base existed through an agreement with King Idris's government and hosted fighter, bomber, and transport units. Its position on the Mediterranean coast, directly south of Italy and Sicily, made it a critical NATO asset for projecting power into the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.
The case was classified "Unknown" — from one of the most strategically positioned American bases outside the Western Hemisphere.
