Project Blue Book Case #1108. On April 12, 1952, an unidentified object was observed over North Bay, Ontario — the city that would become home to NORAD's Canadian underground command center. While the massive underground complex beneath the Canadian Shield was not yet built in 1952, North Bay was already an important RCAF air defense station.
RCAF Station North Bay served as a sector control center for Canadian air defense, coordinating interceptor aircraft and radar stations across central Canada. The facility's role in the binational defense network made it a critical component of the early warning system protecting North America from Soviet bomber attack.
North Bay sits on the shore of Lake Nipissing, approximately 200 miles north of Toronto. The Canadian Shield terrain — ancient rock, boreal forest, and thousands of lakes — provided a dramatic and remote setting. The sighting reached Blue Book through the bilateral intelligence channels connecting Canadian and American air defense.
The case was classified "Unknown" — a notable designation from what would become one of NORAD's most important command facilities.
