Project Blue Book Case #2962. On April 9, 1954, a bright object was observed over Chicago, Illinois — the second Blue Book unknown from the nation's second city, following Case #1382 from July 1952. Chicago's continued contribution to the unresolved case files demonstrated that the phenomenon was not a one-time occurrence in any given location.
By 1954, O'Hare International Airport was nearing completion and would soon become the world's busiest airport. Midway Airport still dominated Chicago's commercial aviation. Military operations at Glenview Naval Air Station and various reserve facilities added to the city's complex airspace.
April 1954 was during a relatively quiet period before the great autumn European wave. American sighting rates were moderate, allowing Blue Book to give individual cases more attention.
Chicago's role as the nation's transportation hub — rail, air, highway, and water — made it one of the most observed cities in America. The bright object reported in April 1954 had to distinguish itself from the constant flow of air traffic over the metropolitan area to be noticed and reported.
No conventional explanation was found. The case was classified "Unknown."
