The harbour at Picton, the county seat of Prince Edward County in Ontario, is allegedly haunted by a ghost known as 'Picton Pete.' According to local legend, Pete was a sailor who drowned in the harbour under mysterious circumstances — some say he was murdered and thrown into the water, while others suggest he fell from a ship during a storm. Whatever his fate, his ghost has been a fixture of Picton harbour folklore for generations. Fishermen and dock workers have reported seeing a figure walking on the breakwater at night, dressed in the heavy wool clothing of a 19th-century sailor. He appears to be soaked through, as though he has just emerged from the water, and he vanishes when observers call out to him. Some sailors have described hearing knocking on the hull of their boats at night when moored in the harbour, and the sound of someone climbing the dock ladder without anyone being visible. Prince Edward County, surrounded by the waters of Lake Ontario and the Bay of Quinte, has a strong maritime tradition, and ghost stories of drowned sailors are embedded in the county's culture. Picton Pete is the most famous of these maritime ghosts.
