The Lincoln Heights Jail in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles operated from 1931 to 1965 as the city's primary jail facility. During its decades of operation, the jail processed thousands of inmates and was the site of considerable suffering, overcrowding, and at least several deaths. After its closure, the Art Deco building sat abandoned for decades, becoming a magnet for urban explorers and paranormal investigators. Those who have entered the former jail report hearing cell doors slamming in empty corridors, the sound of keys jangling when no one is present, and disembodied voices speaking in both English and Spanish. Shadow figures have been seen moving behind the bars of empty cells, and some investigators report being overwhelmed by feelings of anger and despair in the solitary confinement area. The jail's most famous ghost is said to be a woman who died in custody under unclear circumstances — her screams have allegedly been heard echoing from the women's section of the building. The building has been used as a filming location for various television shows and movies, and cast and crew members have added their own accounts of unexplained experiences to the jail's growing paranormal dossier.
