Project Blue Book Case #3140. On July 30, 1954, a bright object was observed over Los Angeles, California — the center of America's aerospace industry. The greater LA area hosted Lockheed, Douglas, North American Aviation, Northrop, Hughes, and Convair, manufacturing everything from fighter jets to ballistic missiles. Los Angeles International Airport, multiple military airfields, and the constant stream of test flights from nearby Edwards AFB made LA's airspace the most aviation-dense in the world.
Despite this extraordinary concentration of aerospace expertise and air traffic monitoring, the object could not be identified. The case was classified "Unknown."
