Project Blue Book Case #3180. On August 24, 1954, an unidentified object was observed over the Lagarfljót River in eastern Iceland — the fourth Blue Book unknown from this strategically vital NATO island. The Lagarfljót is famous in Icelandic folklore as the home of the Lagarfljótsormur — Iceland's version of the Loch Ness Monster. The convergence of an unidentified aerial object with a location famous for an unidentified aquatic cryptid adds an unusual layer to an already exotic case.
August 1954 was during the opening phase of the great European wave. Iceland's fourth case reinforced its status as one of the most persistent overseas locations in the Blue Book database. The case was classified "Unknown."
