McMenamins Edgefield in Troutdale, Oregon, occupies a sprawling 74-acre property that began as the Multnomah County Poor Farm in 1911. The facility housed the county's indigent, elderly, and mentally ill for decades, and later served as a tuberculosis hospital, a nursing home, and a county jail. Hundreds of people died on the property during its institutional years, and many were buried in unmarked graves on the grounds. Since its conversion to a hotel, winery, and entertainment complex by the McMenamins chain, staff and guests have reported extensive paranormal activity. Apparitions of former residents — described as elderly people in hospital gowns — have been seen in the corridors of the main building, particularly on the upper floors. Staff working late have reported hearing crying, coughing, and whispered conversations in empty rooms. Some guests have described waking to find a figure standing in their room, watching them sleep, before dissolving into the darkness. The property's power plant building, which housed the morgue, is considered particularly active, with reports of extreme cold spots, shadow figures, and equipment malfunctions. The unmarked cemetery on the property's west side is another focal point, with visitors reporting the sensation of being followed when walking near the graves.
