Project Blue Book Case #384. On May 9, 1949, witnesses in Tucson, Arizona, observed an unidentified object near Davis-Monthan Air Force Base — the earliest of what would become three Blue Book unknowns from the Tucson area (followed by cases in August and September 1952). Davis-Monthan was already established as a Strategic Air Command installation.
This early Tucson sighting occurred during the Project Grudge era, just months after the Air Force had transitioned from the more open-minded Project Sign. The desert Southwest was producing a cluster of reports during 1949, with Fort Bliss, White Sands, and various New Mexico locations also contributing cases.
Tucson's clear desert skies and the proximity to Davis-Monthan — where military personnel provided credible witnesses — made this an important early case. The object's characteristics were described as disc-shaped or unusual in form, distinguishing it from conventional aircraft.
The case was classified "Unknown" — the first of Tucson's three Blue Book unknowns spanning a period from 1949 to 1952.
