Devil's Den is a formation of massive granite boulders at the southern end of the Gettysburg battlefield in Pennsylvania, where intense fighting took place on July 2, 1863, between Confederate soldiers from Hood's Texas Brigade and Union forces defending the rocky position. The fighting in and around the boulders was close-quarters and brutal, with soldiers climbing over rocks, firing at point-blank range, and engaging in hand-to-hand combat. The area around Devil's Den is one of the most haunted sections of the Gettysburg battlefield. Visitors have reported seeing Confederate soldiers positioned behind the rocks, as though preparing for an assault. One persistent account describes a ragged man in a butternut uniform who approaches tourists and says 'What you're looking for is over there,' pointing toward the Slaughter Pen — then vanishes. Photographs taken at Devil's Den frequently show unexplained anomalies, and several famous ghost photographs have originated here. Visitors describe hearing musket fire, shouted commands, and the groans of wounded men. The enormous boulders create natural hiding places and narrow passages that amplify sounds and shadows, making it easy to imagine how terrifying the actual battle must have been.
