Catemaco, in the Catemaco Municipality of Veracruz, is internationally known as the 'Wizard Capital' of Mexico. The town, situated on the shore of Lake Catemaco in the volcanic Los Tuxtlas region, has been a centre of witchcraft, folk healing, and sorcery for centuries. Every year on the first Friday of March, hundreds of brujos (witches/sorcerers) gather to perform mass rituals on Cerro del Mono Blanco (White Monkey Hill). The town's supernatural reputation extends beyond witchcraft to include ghost sightings throughout the municipality. Visitors report seeing phantom processions of robed figures along the lake shore, hearing drums and chanting from the jungle, and encountering spirits in the town's colonial-era church. The caves and hot springs in the surrounding jungle are considered portals to the spirit world by local practitioners of both indigenous Olmec-derived traditions and syncretic Catholic folk magic. Catemaco's brujos offer services ranging from healing to hexing, and their presence creates a community where the supernatural is not merely believed in but professionally practiced. The combination of Olmec spiritual geography, Catholic mysticism, and African-derived religious practices (brought by enslaved people to Veracruz) makes Catemaco one of the most spiritually complex locations in the Americas.
