Project Blue Book Case #1522. On the afternoon of July 21, 1952, military personnel and pilots at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio observed a bright, round object maneuvering at high altitude over the base. The object appeared luminous white against the clear Texas sky and was tracked visually for several minutes as it executed sharp directional changes that ruled out conventional aircraft.
Randolph AFB was one of the Air Training Command's most important installations, serving as the primary pilot training center for the U.S. Air Force. The witnesses — experienced aviators and ground crew — were well-versed in identifying aircraft types, weather balloons, and atmospheric phenomena common to the south Texas corridor.
The object maintained a steady luminosity throughout the observation, showing no navigation lights, exhaust trail, or other features associated with known aircraft. Its movements included sudden stops and high-speed departures that exceeded the performance capabilities of any jet aircraft in the 1952 inventory. Wind conditions and upper-atmosphere data were checked against balloon launch schedules with negative correlation.
Air Force investigators considered and eliminated aircraft, weather balloons, astronomical objects, and atmospheric reflections. The case occurred during the historic 1952 UFO wave — the most concentrated period of sightings in Blue Book history — when reports were flooding in from military installations across the country. Case #1522 was classified "Unknown," one of hundreds from that extraordinary summer that defied explanation.
