Project Blue Book Case #6089. On October 2, 1958, witnesses near Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania — a community in the Pocono Mountains along the Delaware Water Gap — observed a bright object that exhibited distinct color changes as it moved through the sky. The object alternated between white, reddish, and bluish hues in a pattern inconsistent with any known aircraft lighting or atmospheric effect.
Stroudsburg sits at the edge of the Pocono plateau where the Delaware River cuts through the Appalachian ridge. The mountainous terrain provided elevated vantage points with clear sightlines, and the area's relatively low population density in 1958 meant minimal light pollution. The Poconos' position approximately 80 miles from both New York City and Philadelphia placed it beneath commercial air routes but far from the congested terminal airspace.
The color-changing behavior was a distinguishing characteristic that elevated this case above routine sightings. While aircraft navigation lights cycle through red and green, they do so in a predictable, standardized pattern. The Stroudsburg object's color transitions were described as gradual shifts across the visible spectrum — a phenomenon inconsistent with any known artificial light source or natural atmospheric effect.
The October 1958 timing fell during a relatively quiet period for Blue Book, between the major waves of 1957 and the mid-1960s. Cases from these inter-wave periods sometimes received more thorough investigation due to the lower caseload.
No conventional explanation was found. The case was classified "Unknown."
