Bright object observed over Ridgecrest near China Lake weapons center, California (1960)

On September 10, 1960, a bright object was observed over Ridgecrest, California — the community adjacent to the Naval Ordnance Test Station at China Lake, one of the military's most important weapons development facilities. China Lake's million-acre reservation tested some of the most advanced weapons in the world. Ridgecrest's residents lived alongside the testing and knew every type of ordnance signature. The case was classified "Unknown."
