Project Blue Book Case #3222. On September 21, 1954, witnesses near Barstow, California — a desert crossroads community on the route between Los Angeles and Las Vegas — observed a bright object in the sky. Barstow's position in the heart of the Mojave Desert placed it within one of the most extensively militarized landscapes in the world.
The Marine Corps Logistics Base at Barstow, Fort Irwin (the Army's National Training Center), Edwards Air Force Base, China Lake Naval Weapons Center, and George Air Force Base all surrounded Barstow within roughly a 50-mile radius. The desert skies above this region were among the most heavily used military airspace in the country, with test flights, bombing ranges, and training exercises generating constant activity.
Despite this extraordinary concentration of military aviation, the object observed near Barstow did not match any known aircraft type. Witnesses in the Mojave Desert corridor were accustomed to seeing experimental aircraft, high-speed jets, and unusual military vehicles — for them to report something truly unrecognizable was significant.
The September 1954 timing coincided with the opening phase of the great European wave, which was producing unprecedented numbers of UFO reports across France and Italy. American sighting rates were also elevated during this period.
All military flight operations in the Mojave corridor were checked without finding a correlation. The case was classified "Unknown."
